Healthy soil is the key to healthy plants
Here at Coast of Maine we are proud of the quality and consistency of our compost-based soils. Compost, or, recycled organic matter that is allowed to slowly decompose, is the key to healthy soil. We create our composts with carefully designed and tested recipes which include the very best ingredients sustainably sourced from local farms and pristine ocean waters combined with a rigorous quality control process. And, because we are committed to providing the highest quality organic products, we never use bio-solids, municipal or household waste. Close attention to detail with frequent turning, sampling and testing plus a lengthy aging and curing process produces a dark, rich, compost that helps to build soil and enhance plant growth.
We use all natural ingredients
Our Organic & Natural Planting Soil for Roses and Flowers is hand-crafted for home flower gardening. Use with all rose varieties, flowering shrubs, annuals, and perennials.
Directions for Use
Conditioning & revitalizing soil
Organic & Natural Planting Soil for Roses & Flowers is the ideal soil conditioner to improve and revitalize the soil around your roses and flowers. It is naturally lightweight and contains just the right ingredients to get your beautiful flowers off to a good start.
New & Existing garden beds
For new beds, sandy, compacted or clay soil, work in 2” to 3” of Organic & Natural Planting Soil for Roses & Flowers into the top 4” to 6“ of existing soil before planting. To maintain healthy permanent beds, apply a 2” to 3” layer of our Organic & Natural Planting Soil every year around your existing roses and flowers. This is best done in the spring before new foliage emerges and in the middle of the growing-season to refresh beds.
Planting holes
When planting roses, dig a hole twice as deep and twice as wide as the root ball. Set the root ball down in the hole and keep the stem the same height as it was in the pot. Back fill with equal parts native soil and our Organic & Natural Planting Soil for Roses & Flowers. Do not pack the soil down around the plant, as this eliminates valuable airspace for the roots. Rather, water the plant in to settle the soil, adding more if needed. Water thoroughly and regularly until the plant has established itself.
Feed on the surface of the soil around the dripline of the plant, twice during the growing season with an organic plant food like our Stonington Blend™ Organic Plant Food.
For Moisture Retention, top dress 2″ – 3″ with Coast of Maine Dark Harbor Blend™ or Fundy Blend™ Enriching Mulches. Take care not to cover or bury the stems of roses by pulling the compost and mulch away from the stem.
