The Coast of Maine Difference
Here at Coast of Maine we are proud of the quality and consistency of our compost-based soils. Compost, we believe (naturally decomposed organic matter) is the key ingredient. Ours are made using carefully designed and tested recipes which include the very best ingredients (sustainably sourced from pristine ocean waters and local farms) combined with rigorous quality controls. We never use biosolids, municipal or household waste. Close attention to detail with frequent turning, sampling and testing plus a lengthy aging and curing process produces dark, rich compost.
We believe Monhegan Blend™ Organic & Natural Black Earth Lawn Soil is the ideal soil amendment for reconditioning lawns, overseeding, patching and filling holes. It can also be used in beds and gardens. Monhegan Blend™ is carefully formulated to provide balance between structure, water retention, drainage and aeration. It provides your lawn and grounds the rich and diverse soil they need.

Follow these few, simple steps
Lawn maintenance:
Monhegan Blend™ is a good choice for revitalizing a lawn. Use it as a top-dressing any time during the growing season, then water in. For general over-seeding and lawn repairs, we recommend thoroughly mixing seed with Monhegan Blend™ in a wheel-barrow before spreading. This is best done in the fall, when the soil is warm, and rain more consistent. In either case, use a plastic leaf rake to spread the compost evenly. Use one bag of our soil per 10 – 15 square feet of lawn.
Filling holes & low spots:
Fill any low spots or depressions in an established lawn with Monhegan Blend™. Make sure to over-fill the hole, then lightly tamp the soil down, smooth it over with a rake, seed, mulch and water.
Conditioning beds & gardens:
To recondition poor garden soil, work 2 inches into the top 4 to 6 inches of soil. To maintain established beds and gardens and for roses, most vegetables, herbs and flowers, top-dress with 1 – 2 inches of Monhegan Blend™.
Top dressing:
On any well established lawn, top-dress with 1/4” to 1/2” of Monhegan Blend™ at least once a year, in the spring or late fall. Apply with a spreader or broadcast by hand, lightly rake to level, tamp or roll, seed (where required) and water.
